The best sounding engines are those twin cam/twin carb I-4s that small sports cars from the 60's and 70's all had.

I actually prefer the road engines. They have this cool timbre, like two voices singing at once. The race engines are just noise.

One of my most vivid childhood memories is from following Rally NZ in t he early 70s. I remember s tanding with my dad in a back- bloc ks forest in the misty winter dawn , listening as the first car of the day - Hannu Mikk ola in a works RS1800 - came over the pass a few miles away and brapped his way down the valley towards us.
Still raises the hair on the back of my neck just remembering it.

This is a great take. The small twin-carb motors of that period sound really nice.

There's a depth to the sound that you just don't get with EFI engines.
